Plateau Attack: 22 Killed as Gunmen Storm Village and Health Centre

The death toll from a brutal overnight attack on Kawel village in Mushere District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, has risen to 22, with health workers, patients, and security personnel among the victims — making it one of the deadliest attacks recorded in Plateau State in recent months.

What happened

Armed attackers stormed Kawel community at around 11:40 pm on Sunday, June 21, opening fire indiscriminately on residents and destroying property as panic spread through the village. In a particularly disturbing element of the assault, gunmen also stormed the community's Primary Health Care Centre, shooting health workers on duty and patients who were receiving treatment at the time — meaning some of the dead were people seeking medical help, not just those caught in the open. Victims reportedly included a local clergyman, medical staff, and security personnel who had responded to the scene.

The response so far

The death toll climbed steadily as assessments continued: police initially confirmed 20 deaths, before Bokkos Youth Leader Christopher Luka reported the figure had reached 22 following further hospital assessments, noting that burials had been delayed due to heavy rainfall in the area. 

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the attack in an official statement, and Governor Caleb Mutfwang has directed security agencies to intensify operations in the affected area, identify the perpetrators, and deploy additional tactical teams and Police Mobile Force personnel to restore calm. Community leaders, however, have accused security agencies of inaction despite what they describe as prior intelligence about attackers operating from nearby hideout communities — a claim that, if true, raises hard questions about response time even when warnings exist.

Part of a wider, troubling pattern

This attack did not happen in isolation. It came less than a week after the killing of a local district head in a separate ambush in the same LGA, and fits into a documented string of violent incidents across Plateau State's rural communities in recent months — attacks that have repeatedly targeted farmers, herders, and now, for the first time in this cluster, health workers and patients directly. This tragedy comes as security concerns continue to affect other parts of Nigeria, including Oyo State, where authorities recently imposed emergency measures following a series of kidnapping.
